ABOUT REH REFLECTS

My mind is on an endless journey with many twists and turns. Some turns get me irritated some make me very happy.

Reh used to often repeat certain childhood incidents ad nauseam so our Autism Consultant, Carol Subramani, suggested he start writing it in a journal. Thus in the summer of 2018, Reh began penning certain childhood memories and stories into a written journal. To our amazement, these stories meant a lot to him (hence the incessant repetitions)! We realised that as he wrote he gave us a unique insight and perspective that we had not been able to decipher until then. Meghna Visaria his school teacher,  encouraged him to continue writing digitally.

From then on Reh has written about various topics that interest him and lots of incidents he couldn't express in words. He feels delighted and hugely relieved that he is able to finally convey things to us in this way. We noticed that his need to repeat the same things began to fade too. With the help of his special educator Riddhi Gogri, he painstakingly created a digital book in the summer of 2020 during the lockdown and even recorded all the stories in his own voice. This was greatly appreciated by everyone, which sowed the seeds for a permanent blog created by my good friend Freddy Nagarvala.

His teacher in school Manda Nambiar has tirelessly worked with him over several months on zoom chatting and collecting his thoughts that he pens on the whiteboard meticulously.  You can see how his "inner thoughts and feelings" have matured as he grew up. This is a collection of his ongoing introspective entries in no particular order but dated on the days he wrote them. Our hope is that this reaches as many teachers, therapists, struggling parents, family members, and the many children on the spectrum who can relate to these incidents.

This is an ode to understanding all the children whose minds are brimming with thoughts, feelings, hope, a longing to be friendly, understood, and accepted without being judged for who they are. Hope you enjoy being on this journey with us as Reh reflects.

Thank you.
